Welcome to Generation Gap where we ask you about your favorite generation of a certain multi-generational car nameplate. Then, explain why your choice is right to the rest of us uneducated folks.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Last time on Generation Gap we featured the definitive American minivan, the Dodge Grand Caravan/Chrysler Town & Country, which has widely been credited for inventing the minivan category. However, when the Honda Odyssey came to the American market, the second generation minivan quickly became the reviewers’ choice when it came to the best MPV around. Which of these J-series V6 (barring the original) powered beasts is your favorite?
The options:
First Generation [1995 - 1998] RL1
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Second Generation [1999 - 2004] and facelift RL2
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Third Generation [2005 - 2010] and facelift RL3; RL4
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Fourth Generation [2011 - Present] and facelift RL5

I voted for the 1st gen for it’s clean looks, then I realized it’s the only one without sliding doors but it’s too late to change the vote.
The JDM looks quite sharp too:

First gen, obv. Think how far ahead of its time it really was. It’s a cross over! What makes a minivan out of the question for so many people, and a cross over or SUV so much better? Sliding doors! It’s literally the only thing that makes minivans lame, and Honda came right out of the gate with a better idea.
Second gen is saddled with the worst transmission ever to come out of Russell’s Point, Ohio. Horrible, just horrible. Replace it at 70k, and then again at 120. Avoid it like the plague.
Third gen is decent, but boring. Meh.
Fifth gen? Seriously? So ugly. Who are you kidding with that hip bump in the rear glass? No one, that’s who. You’re an ugly bloated $50,000 crap wagon.
First gen for lyyyyyyfe.
I may have taken this too seriously.

When I think mini van, I think Astro. Duh
But when I think mini van again, I think second gen odyssey.
Just a classic van. Everybody’s mom has one so all the kids my age drive them and I’ve had some good times in them

Indeed, when I was little everyone had a second-gen Ody, then we got our third-gen in December of 2004 and it was groundbreaking. Turns out minivan interiors don’t have to be made of an unending sea of greyness! Also, less transmission issues. The 3rd gen was the minivan at its most distilled form, then they screwed it up with the new one.

Well the first gen also had a 2.2-3 litre I4 which does not cut it in a 7-seater in America, unlike in Europe where it’s the norm.
The second gen had transmissions which would literally drop out third gear periodically (according to urban legend) so definitely a no-go there. Also, the interior is amazingly dreary and grey, as with most Japanese cars of the late ‘90s to early 2000's.
The third gen is essentially the distillation of the minivan; everything that you need, nothing that you don’t. Reasonable V6, roomy, but nothing super exciting or groundbreaking.
The fourth gen is a stylistic and technological nightmare. The two-screen infotainment is awful, the driving dynamics have worsened, and the entire thing looks hideous as well. Honestly, the Sedona is a much better option now and perhaps even the new Pacifica (the ergonomics in the new Sienna are plasticky and cheap as all hell, and the Quest crashes in a way which will almost certainly kill you.)

Yep, it’s basically the Accord wagon that the U.S. never got, just taller and with sliding doors.

Ugh, the new international Ody is way too overstyled IMO. The old MPV-versions with regular doors looked way better.

A tad underpowered, maybe. But it was small and light by today’s standards. I don’t remember thinking they were dogs back then when I would get behind the wheel. Plus Honda already had all those Accord engines lying around. Frankly that’s a real plus on these, those engines are bullet proof, easy to maintain, and parts are cheap when you need them.
Otherwise, I completely agree with your analysis.

Honestly, the second gen is most iconic. They were everywhere before their transmissions failed. You still see a lot of them. However, for minivan duty, I’d prefer the fourth gen - more reliable, more creature comforts, safer, etc. All things I’d want to see in a family hauler.

I’ve never had any personal experiences with the third gen. I think my dad brought me to test drive one a long time ago when they were newer but that’s it. I’m with ya on the 4th gen though, too weird for me
